An illustration of a dwarf warrior for any fantasy -themed role-playing game settings. An older illustration for sure, but for some reason I still like how this character turned out.
Name: Eril Halgor Mundrek
Location: Fortress Egarmar, Pallor, Crovania
The dwarves of Crovania are a tight bunch and most are somehow – even if only by extended family members – linked to the Fortress Egarmar located at the heart of the Erildom of Pallor about three kilometers above the sea level resting on a mighty cliff protruding from one of the peaks of the Grellamur mountain. This is where pretty much all of the dwarven males of Crovania get their martial training. The dwarves of Crovania are extremely proud of the fact that their martial expertise has always been highly regarded not by people of Crovania only but the whole of Cresia. Saying out loud something akin to “I’ve trained at Fortress Egarmar.” will produce deeply respectful nods all around Cresia.
Eril Halgor Mundrek is the ruler of the erildom and calls the fortress as his home. He has lived half of his life surrounded by the bleak and inhospitable environment provided by the Grellamur mountain but he would not trade away even a single day. The fortress is his life and baby as well as he is not only the lord of the region but also the commander of the fortress. He participates in the daily life of the fortress as well by giving martial training to experienced veteran professional soldiers wishing to further master the art of killing. His specialties are improvised weapons, battling with broken equipment, disadvantageous positioning, combat with pole-arms and prolonged combat with heavy armor. He has gained actual combat experience in several campaigns over the years – including many conflicts between warlords in Gruenroth and border conflicts between Gruenroth and Zarnova.
Halgor is a man who extends respect to others possessing similar virtues he himself has; like stoic patience, discipline bordering insanity and candidness of speech. He is not afraid to say things as they are and respects others for doing the same even if they would insult or belittle something he values in the process. He has little support among the other erils of the kingdom but his position is still without a question one of utmost importance as he has easy access to an army of highly trained dwarven soldiers. Dwarves of Crovania even from other erildoms are trained free of charge and costs are covered by the erildom of Pallor and while nothing is required of them there and then, it’s expected that they remain in gratitude and support the fortress in any way they can for the rest of their lives. The fortress is open for other people as well but non-dwarves and persons from other countries are subjected to entry fees, training fees, lodging fees and upkeep fees … in other words for outsiders it is quite expensive to enter training in the fortress. However, the training there is brutally efficient, adaptive to modern world demands and offered by extremely skilled instructors many of which are retired and experienced combat veterans themselves. The fortress accepts trainees of all skill levels when it comes to local dwarves but imposes mandatory and dangerous testing for outsiders to determine if they can be accepted to train in the fortress.

Name: Miriam Ronvar
Location: Cormael, Inhal Org, Kingdom of Akron
Being a member in one of the leading dwarf clans has it’s perks. Clan Ronvar members have their bed made for them within the dwarven communities but also automatically have a high standing outside traditional dwarven areas.
Miriam is distantly related to the current Count of Gorgehold, Uran Ronvar, Her chosen path in life, however, led her out from Gorgehold as she chose the life of a travelling adventurer instead of a more traditional role. She traveled from Caheb to Argan doing the occasional odd job to sustain herself and joining other adventurers in miscellaneous quests – not all of which she is proud of.
After a decade she returned to Akron but instead of going back to Gorgehold she met a man through an act of fate and settled down with him in Cormael. But life was cruel to her and snatched his beloved away from him only after three years of marriage. Miriam was by then a happy and respected citizen of Cormael and the leading figure of her clan in the city and made a decision stay in the city and call it her home. The clan members of the Clan Ronvar within the city are all under her lead and she has the final say on what activities the clan takes part in. Currently the clan members have a solid piece of the metal goods trade, control at least part of the forges in the city and gain income from quarries by controlling part of the workforce associated with the quarries.
Miriam is a modest and timid-looking stout little woman but has a strong and adamant will matching the best of trained men and she is quite skilled in various aspects of the adventuring life. She makes no noise of herself – unlike a few of her fellow clan members in the city – and keeps quiet on things she has no constructive to add. In the city of Cormael, Miriam now works as a foreman and Quarry Master in charge of the daily operations of one of the stone quarries near the city. Her position of authority is a cause for constant friction between her and human males under her lead but so far she has been able to resolve things admirably. On her spare time she is a frequent patron of the Quiet Dwarf tavern that is – despite it’s name – a rowdy and noisy bar frequented by some of the more … unsavory elements of the city and constantly monitored by the city guard. She happens to live on the same block the tavern is located. While not creating trouble herself she does enjoy the tavern’s rather restless atmosphere and even takes part in bar fights on occasion. She is well known and well liked by the tavern regulars and her wide knowledge of the world she has gathered in a decade of travelling is both admired and respected.

Name: Count Uran Ronvar
Location: Gorge, Gorgehold, Akron
Uran is the leader of Clan Ronvar and also the count of Gorgehold covering a good 15% of the whole kingdom including the cities of Gorge, Patas and Medon. All of which have mountains in close proximity and several dwarven clans. Most of the dwarven population in Akron is centered in Gorgehold and while the overall numbers are tiny compared to humans in the kingdom, at least in the city of Gorge dwarves are in the majority.
Uran Ronvar used to be a miner himself born of a clan of successful iron ore miners. Ronvar, however, struck gold – so to speak – a century earlier when he took control of the clan’s affairs are cut of all the middlemen from trading. He created an infrastructure chain that encompasses land acquisition, mining operations, purification of the raw ore, production of iron ingots, production of steel ingots and steady trading routes to Ferria and Calishem alike. It took decades to establish all this, but once there, the Ronvar clan started accumulating wealth and power. Uran Ronvar directed his clan towards strict quality standards and steady supply and in essence managed to create a still lasting reputation of quality and stability to his clan’s work. Now all the finest and most expensive weapons and armor in the world are made of Ronvar steel.
Uran took control of Gorgehold 20 years ago after a bloody confrontation between three rivaling clans each trying to become the top dog in Gorgehold. Ronvars emerged as the winner and in the process annihilated – to the last man – the now extinct clan of Gorgebear. Akron’s other counties and the king accepted Uran Ronvar and while the violence was at times nearing civil war level, they were reluctant to take sides in knowing that dwarven clans never, ever forget who takes which side! The years after that tumultuos time have been kind to all residents of the county and Uran has made it abundantly clear that he shares the wealth of the county to each and every one that co-operates with his clan’s ambitions. Not much resistance exists now and Gorgehold under Uran Ronvar’s rule is a peaceful and wealthy county.
