Illustrated here is Joseph (played by Vincent Cassel) from the French horror movie Sheitan (2006; directed by Kim Chapiron). Cassel has a number of movie roles where he acts and looks like a maniac on speed but his mad grinning in Sheitan is yet to be topped. For some reason horror movie genre fans tend to ignore Sheitan when it comes to speaking about extreme modern French horror movie phenomena – perhaps the comedic undertones put off people who only consider seriously made bloody somber mayhem as part of the movement. But I for one appreciate Cassel’s mad grinning and the sheer lunacy displayed on screen.
